As you probably know, each Graduate hotel is unique to the community that it’s in. From astronaut-shaped lamps in Graduate Cincinnati guest rooms to a custom DNA-shaped light fixture above the Graduate Cambridge front desk, there’s a story behind every design detail, big and small.
Many times, these details come together to create spaces that feel like they’re straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. So, a partnership with our friends at Accidentally Wes Anderson felt like a no brainer. We recently explored Graduate Providence with them—keep reading for some of our favorite movie-esque moments and stories from around the hotel.
Travel Back in Time
With a history dating back to 1922, Graduate Providence is bursting with old-school charm and elegance. Formally the Providence Biltmore, this iconic hotel has its share of stories. From a secret basement speakeasy during prohibition to a ballroom-turned-aquarium featuring a real-life “mermaid” in the ‘40s (yes, you read that right), this historic site has seen it all.
A Grand Entrance
Many famous faces have walked through the hotel’s breathtaking lobby, including Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and the Kennedys. Once inside, make sure to look up—the ornate ceilings were designed by Warren and Wetmore, the same team behind NYC’s Grand Central Terminal. The magnificent crystal chandeliers are from the ‘20s as well. Grand Budapest, who?
You’ll have to check in to check out the custom bookshelf wallpaper in the guest rooms. Every title featured on these faux shelves is related to Providence or Rhode Island. Look closely at the picture and you might even see a nod to a famous Wes Anderson flick. (Hint: take a peek at the coffee table).
Our friends at Accidentally Wes Anderson put together a guide of hidden gems, local stories and must-see sites in Providence, Rhode Island. Make sure to check it out before your next trip.
