Coffee, Lunch & All-Day Breakfast in Bookish Surroundings
On-Point Hangout
Every great writer needs inspiration. Poindexter Coffee fuels your muse with author-approved décor and plenty of caffeinated beverages. A wall covered in more than 170,000 No. 2 pencils (a nod to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop) sets the scene for this on-point hangout. The emerald green and eraser pink tiled bar also salutes the classic writing utensil. Recharge with tasty café offerings, including hot breakfast sandwiches, fresh salads, coffee, smoothies, pressed juices, and more — perfect for hungry travelers and Hawkeyes hitting the books. Be sure to check out the Iowa-centric art from RAYGUN, a local favorite and self-proclaimed “greatest store in the universe.”

A Laid-Back Throwback
Named for notable Iowa alum Gene Wilder, Gene’s celebrates the actor’s most memorable (and hilarious) decade — the 1970s. This rocking indoor-outdoor bar features the era’s signature décor, with stained glass lamps, lots of knotty pine, macramé and a beaded curtain for good measure. Kick back with pals in a booth and enjoy downhome bites. Right on the Ped Mall, our retro retreat in downtown Iowa City is open dinner, late-night drinks and weekend brunch.
